Next step for finding a missing person
A family member or close friend goes missing – when should you engage a private investigator?
Introduction
It is reported that more than 8,000 people go missing in New Zealand in a calendar year. Fortunately, the bulk of those persons are located but what investigation work is conducted into the 1% who fail to be accounted for?
The Police recognise that the first 72 hours are critical in identifying where the missing person might be and what has happened to them. Questions will be asked about the persons mental health, issues with other family members, any previous occasions of running away, and other questions of a similar nature.
If the circumstances in which the person went missing are obviously suspicious then a homicide enquiry may well be started.
The Police have limited resources in terms of searching for the missing person but, if the circumstances are suspicious, then expect a large team of Police officers and other experts to be engaged. This will include volunteer search and rescue people who are highly trained and very experienced.
Land and air-based searches are expensive and don’t expect them to continue endlessly. If items of interest are located, then scientific assistance will be sought to confirm the relevance of any items located.
Instructing a private investigator
In my experience, I would leave the Police to do their job in those early days. That will include them briefing the media on the disappearance and seeking the help of the public. If it is apparent from very early on that no progress is being made, then yes, instruct an experienced investigator and provide all the relevant information that you have.
The investigator will look at the circumstances and give you an independent analysis and viewpoint.
The key to employing a private investigator is that your case will immediately be given top priority and you will be in control of the outcome. Witnesses will be identified and interviewed including family members, workmates and friends. If the missing person was seen in a particular area, the investigator will visit that location and form his own view as to what might have happened.
Cost
Private investigators charge an hourly rate together with travel expenses. It is recommended that an initial budget be set and the case reviewed once those funds are expended. In most cases, you will need to pay a retainer. Positive leads would be followed up immediately and you would be briefed on a daily basis.
